Netscape X for Mac is a solid option that performs well with all of the features expected of a good Web browser. The problem isn't with the program or how it works, it's actually a message from.
Note:Netscape Communicator is a suite ofsoftware programs. If you are using Netscape Communicator, you shouldlook for information about Netscape Navigator 4.x to answer yourNetscape web browsing questions, Netscape Collabra for Netscapenewsreading questions, Netscape Messenger for Netscape emailquestions, and Netscape Composer for questions about NetscapeHTML document editing.

You must have the Netscape Communicatorsuite to read email; the stand-alone version of Netscape Navigator4.x does not access email. Versions of Netscape Navigatorprior to version 2.0 also do not access email.
Initial settings
To use the Messenger component of Netscape Communicator, you mustfirst configure a few settings. From the Edit menu, selectPreferences.... In the
Preferences
window,click Mail & Groups. Click the Mail Serversubmenu, and fill in the appropriate fields:- Mail server username: Your email username(e.g.,
dvader
) - Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: Enter thename of the computer that handles the email you are sending.In the 'Outgoing' or 'SMTP' server field, type:
- Incoming mail server: Enter the name of thecomputer on which you receive mail:To access your Exchange account, enter
imap.exchange.iu.edu
. - Mail server type: The Shakespeare and Jewelsystems support only SSL encrypted IMAP, so selectIMAP and Server supports encrypted connections(SSL). Select other options to refine how the server handles yourmail according to your preference.
There are also a few additional settings you can set by clicking theMore Options... button:
- Mail Notification Sound: With Mac OS,you can specify what sound, if any, Messenger will make when it tellsyou there is new mail.
- Remember my mail password: If you check thisoption, Messenger will store your email password and you won't haveto enter it every time you check your mail. While this is convenient,anyone who has access to your computer can check your account for newemail without having to enter a password.
Identity

Within the Mail & Groups menu, selectIdentity. Enter your real name, your full email address (forexample, at IU,
[email protected]
), your'Reply-to' address (usually the same as your email address), and your'Organization'. If you want to include a signature, youcan create a text file on your hard drive and tell Netscape Messengerto include it in every message you send. In Mac OS, you can use yourInternet Config preferences if you select the UseInternet Configuration System box.There are a number of additional settings in theMessages submenu of theMail & Groups menu and in theDisk Space submenu of theAdvanced menu that let you customizeyour mail environment further, but these are optional.
Messenger list window
To access Messenger, from the Communicator menu (in Mac OS,the lighthouse icon), select Messenger Mailbox (in Windows)or Messenger Inbox (in Mac OS). The Messenger list windowmight display a list of messages within the currently selected folder,or it may be divided into two frames. The top frame lists the messageswithin the currently selected folder. The lower frame shows thecurrently selected mail message. Above the top frame is a menuthat lets you switch between mail folders as well as subscribednewsgroups. You can resize the frames by clicking anddragging the margins between them. Once you have modified theseconfigurations, Netscape Communicator will remember them the next timeyou launch the Messenger list window.
At the top of the Messenger list window is a toolbar for varioustasks. In addition to their default actions, you can execute somerelated commands from the toolbar items by either right-clicking them(Windows) or clicking and holding down the mouse button (Mac OS). Theitems are, from left to right:
- Get Msg: Retrieve new messages from the incomingmail server. From the File menu, select GetMessages, then select NEW (Windows) or Get NewMail (Mac OS).
- New Msg: Compose a new message. From theMessage menu, select New Message.
- Reply: Reply to the sender of the currentlyselected message. From the Message menu, chooseReply, then choose one of the reply options.
- Forward: Forward the currently selected messageto someone. From the Message menu, select Forward orForward Quoted. The difference between Forward and ForwardQuoted is that the former sends the forwarded part as an attachment,while the latter sends the forwarded part in the main body of themessage, with each line denoted with a
>
symbol. - File: Move the currently selected message to adifferent folder. From the Message menu, choose FileMessage, then select the folder where you want to save themessage. From the menu, you can choose the related CopyMessage command, which places a copy of the message in a folderyou select, and also retains the message in the currently selectedfolder.
- Next: Moves to the next message. All the commands are under the Go menu, whichlists additional movement commands.
- Print: Print the currently selected message.From the File menu, select Print.
- Security: Displays security information about theselected message. From the Communicator menu, select SecurityInfo.
- Delete: Move the selected message to the
Trash
folder, unless the message is already in theTrash
folder, in which case it deletes the selectedmessage. To delete all the items in theTrash
folder,from the File menu, select Empty Trash. - Stop: Cancels the loading of a folder ormessage. From the View menu, select StopLoading.
Messenger Folder Index frame
The Folder Index of the Messenger list window can have as many as 11different headers, though not all of them may be visible. You canchange the sizes of the different headers by clicking and dragging thelines between their fields. You can change the order in which theyappear by clicking and dragging the headers themselves to differentparts of the frame. The arrows in the right column of the folderindex control how many headers are displayed. If you click the leftarrow, more headers will be displayed. Each time you click the rightarrow, the header that is farthest right will be hidden. If you clicka list header, messages in the index will become sorted by thatheader. Some of the headers, when selected, have an up or down arrowin their fields. An up arrow indicates sorting in descending order,and a down arrow indicates sorting in ascending order. You can alsodetermine sorting order from the Sort submenu, which iswithin the View menu. Similarly, you can determine whichmessages will be displayed by selecting an option under theMessages submenu, also under the View menu.
The available list headers are:
- Thread: Displayed by four horizontal lines ofuneven length. If this header is clicked, messages and their replieswill be grouped together in a hierarchical fashion. Two additionalheaders, Total and Unread, are used with the Threadheader to indicate, respectively, how many messages are in a threadand how many of those have not been read.
- Subject: Lists the subjects of the messages inthe folder
- To/From (Mac OS) or SENDER(Windows): Lists the email address of the sender of the message,except for mail in the
Sent
,Unsent
, andDrafts
folders, which list the recipient - Unread: Displayed by a green diamond. When agreen diamond is in this column next to a message, it indicates thatthe message has not been read. The message's header listings willalso appear in boldface type. To mark a message read or unread, clickin this column next to the message.
- Date: Displays the time of the message'sarrival
- Priority: With this option, you can mark amessage as more or less important. In Mac OS, to mark a message, clickunder this column next to the message. In Windows, right-click amessage, and select CHANGE PRIORITY TO. In both operatingsystems, a menu will appear and you can choose betweenLowest, Low, Normal, High, andHighest.Note: These tags do not affect the delivery ofmessages.
- Flag: Displayed by an orange flag. In additionto changing their priorities, you can also flag messages by clickingunder this column next to a message. You can also flag a selectedmessage by selecting Flag Message from the Messagemenu.
- Status: Indicates whether a message has beenforwarded or replied to
- Length or Size: Indicates sizein KB or MB

Message window and frame
When you select a message in the Folder Index frame, its contents willbe displayed in the message frame below. If you double-click amessage in the Folder Index frame, or choose Open Messagefrom the File menu, a message window will launch with thecontents of that message inside. The message window has a toolbarthat is identical to the message list window's toolbar. There are anumber of message viewing parameters that you can modify:
- Headers: To change the number of headersdisplayed in a message, from the View menu, chooseHeaders and select All, Normal, orBrief for, respectively, a complete, standard, or abbreviatedlist of headers.
- Attachments: Messenger can either displayattachments inline (e.g., inside the message window) or as links(i.e., links to the attached document). To determine Messenger'sbehavior, from the View menu, choose Attachments.Select either Inline or As Links. Documents thatMessenger doesn't know how to display will always be viewed aslinks.
- Wrapping lines: If a message has long lines thatwill not fit in a message window, from the View menu, selectWrap Long Lines.
New Msg (composition) or Send Mail or Discussion Group Messagewindow
When you select New Msg from the toolbar, or otherwise issuea command to compose a new message, a
Composition
windowopens. Netscape Messenger and Netscape Collabra use thesame kind of window to send both email and newsgroup messages. Thetoolbar is similar to other windows in Netscape Communicatorapplications, and includes the following items:- Send: Send the email message. To use the menuequivalent, from the File menu, select Send Now orSend Later.
- Quote: Useful when replying to or forwarding amessage. It includes the contents of the original message in the bodyof the text marked with > signs. To execute this command from themenus, from the File menu, select Quote OriginalText.
- Address: Opens the Communicator address book.From the Communicator menu, select AddressBook.
- Attach: Attach a file to the message. If youclick the Attach button and hold, you can choose to attach aURL or your address book card. To attach a file or URL,from the File menu, select Attach, and then theappropriate option.
- Spelling: Spell check your message. To startspell checking from the menus, from the Tools menu, selectCheck Spelling....
- Save: Save the contents of the email messageinto your
Drafts
folder. To execute the command from themenus, from the File menu, select SaveDraft. - Security: Encrypt and/or securely sign youremail message if your system has a security certificate. To executethe command from the menus, from the Communicator menu,select Security Info.
- Stop: On Mac OS, deactivates the activeplug-in, if any. To do this from a menu, from theTools menu, select Stop Active Plug-in. In Windows, itstops the current transfer, which can also be accomplished by pressingthe
Esc
key.

Below the toolbar are tabs for, from top to bottom, the AddressList, Attachments List, and Options list. Tobring a list to the front, just click its tab. Here is a briefoverview of the function of each list:
- Address List: The Address List has two columns:the left for headers, and the right for addresses. If you click afield in the left column, you can select To, Cc,Bcc, Reply-to (Windows) or Reply (Mac OS),Group (Windows) or Discussion (Mac OS), andFollowup-To (Windows) or Followup (Mac OS) as aheader. The last two options are for posting to newsgroups, while thefirst four are standard email headers. Enter recipient addresses inthe field to the right of the header. You can enter more than oneaddress in a field, separating each by a space.
- Attachments List: This is a list of all theattachments included in an email message.
- Options: The options list allows you to overridesome mail preferences for the message, such as security options orwhether to encode an attachment with MIME oruuencoding.
Message Center window
For organizing your mail and mail folders, use the Message Center. Toaccess this feature, from the Communicator menu, selectMessage Center. The Message Center lists information for bothnewsgroups and email, though this document will discuss only how touse it with mail.

With the Message Center, you can create a hierarchical listing of mailfolders. To expand or collapse a hierarchical listing of folders,click the arrows in the left column. The following are a number oftasks you can perform in the Message Center:
- Creating folders: Click the New Foldertoolbar item or, from the File menu, select NewFolder.... Give the folder a name. A new folder will becreated inside the currently selected folder.
- Moving folders: Click and drag a folder intoanother folder. Release the mouse button and the original folder willbe inside the destination folder.
- Renaming folders: Select a folder and then, fromthe Edit menu (Mac OS), or from the File menu(Windows), select Rename Folder.... To rename a folderfrom its information window, see 'Getting information about folders'below.
- Deleting folders: Select a folder and press the
Del
key or, from the Edit menu, selectClear (Mac OS) or DELETE FOLDER (Windows). - Getting information about folders: Click a folderand then, from the Edit menu, select Get Info (MacOS) or FOLDER PROPERTIES (Windows).
- Compressing folders: Compressing removes wastedspace in a folder. To compress all folders, from the Filemenu, choose Compress Folders. You can compress individualfolders in their information windows by clicking the Clean UpWasted Space button.
Additional Features
Netscape Messenger has a few additional features that this documentwill not explore in detail:

- Address Book: Address Book allows you to createnicknames and distribution lists. You can also storeinformation about individual mail recipients and even search foraddresses via a number of Internet directories. Address Book is on theCommunicator menu.
- Mail Filters: Messenger's mail filters allow youto intercept email messages and apply tasks to them based onconditions you define. Messenger can delete, move, or prioritizemessages automatically. To access filters, from the Editmenu, select Mail Filters....
- Security: You can use Messenger's securityfeatures to encrypt and digitally sign messages you send as well asdecrypt messages you have received. To access security tasks, clickthe Security tool available on most taskbars.
